Melodie Beattie: Codependency...

7. What kind of reader is the text aimed at?

You look at two aspects:

Contents:

➢ a problem everyone may be confronted with

➢ alcoholism and drug addiction may concern everyone

➢ general readership (no specific or specially educated readers necessary) [wide interpretation]

➢ all people who have got an alcoholic or addict in the family [narrow interpretation]

Language/Style:

➢ vocabulary: everyday vocab. with few difficult technical terms

➢ sentence structure: partly long sentences but not difficult or complex (additive with the flow of the thoughts)

➢ grammar: correct but informal (frequent use of “that” instead of “which”

➢ tone: personal, very committed to the cause; [will attract a larger general readership than an impersonal tone of an abstract article]
